chapter seventeen
âWow, black suits you,â Shep said as I stepped out of the washroom.
The dye felt sticky on my scalp, and the earthy scent was so overpowering, it made my eyes water. I looked down at my freshly trimmed locks, trying to see if Iâd missed any lopsided ends when I cleaned up my chop-job. My hair wasnât too much shorter, maybe just a touch above my shoulders now, but it felt completely foreign. My new dress was similar to my old oneâa soft, light blue cotton dress with wood buttons down the front. I wondered if choosing blue was a mistake now that I had the dark hair, but I suppose it wasnât an awful combination.
âAt least I wonât be quite as recognizable.â I flicked my new dark curls, inspecting the tips for any patches of blonde I may have missed. âI know how hard it was for bystanders to ignore my adorableness.â
Shep rolled his eyes, but I could see the hint of a smile tugging at his lips. âWell, your adorableness, you may want to get some sleep while we have a little spare time. You havenât fully rested since we first set off on this trip, and Iâm doubtful you slept much at those inns.â
He pointed toward the unoccupied bed, and suddenly, every lesson in propriety, modesty, and general ladylike behavior came crashing down on me like an armload of books. My mother would certainly disown me if she ever found out Shep and I had traveled alone, and she would probably kill me if she ever heard that we slept in the same room. Every fiber of my manicured noblewoman alter ego resisted the urge to acknowledge the sleepy droop of my eyes and the exhausted ache of my bones.
Nope, no way. Not letting Shep have a chance to see me drool!
âHow about I take first watch while you rest?â I offered with a cool tone. âItâll be easier for me to pick out the robbers if theyâre in disguise, and you need to be well-rested in case we have to go up against Wolfe again.â
Shep folded his arms, and a slight gleam of irritation burned in his retinas like a growing spark. âEvie, you need to sleep.â He sounded sterner than Iâd expected him to be, and maybe even annoyed.
Clearly, Iâm not the only one whoâs tired.
âYou need to sleep, too,â I said with an equally stern frown. âIâm sure youâre worn out after teaching me all those techniques.â
âSo are you.â Shep stood from his chair, that intense frustration returning in his tone. âI could tell how quickly you lost your breath during all that practice. You need to sleep, and I need to stay right here.â
The snap in his tone actually startled me, and his eyes darkened like there was more than just sleep clouding his emotions. Why was he acting so harsh? Was he really just tired?
âShep...â I said softly, reaching out to gently touch his arm. âPlease, Iâm not sure I could even sleep.
